Sue’s Crabby Meal

Blue Ruggie - Rugosus Hermit Crab - Canon G2

Sue, Chestersmom on the HCA, was kind enough to send me this recipe for homemade crab food.

Thought you might like this recipe for your blog…it is a substitute recipe you can make, instead of using pre-formulated foods…this is crab tested…and they LOVE it (heehee Wink ). Christa’s recipe is good too, but if people do not give enough fresh foods high in protein, it can be deficient in proteins over time. Here is mine:

Sue’s Crabby Meal

1/2 cup whole oats
1/2 cup wheatlets (dry)…you guys call them grits I think Wink
2 TBSP browned fresh coconut (I pre-shred my fresh coconut meat)
8 baked bloodworms or mealworms (they are the live ones that I freeze to kill) - freeze dried can be used, but fresh are preferred
1/4 tsp Instant Ocean salt
1 tsp of calcium powder every 4 months (add the calcium powder to every other batch of hermit crab food)

Put all of the ingredients in a coffee mill or blender and blend it into a semi-powder…that feeds my 50 crabs for 60 days or more. It fits in a large babyfood jar which I keep in the fridge. It may not last as long for you if you give them dry foods every day (I don’t).

I have a slightly modified recipe than Christa’s, (hers is great too, but lacks proteins)… I do not use rice either, but if you do choose to use it, brown wild rice is best.

Using Christa’s recipe, or the one I suggest here are 2 alternatives to preformulated foods. You can increase and decrease my recipe as long as you maintain proportion. I use the Instant Ocean salt, but if you use Oceanic thats fine too…just do not use table salt. The salt is there mainly for the trace elements that are in them. Oh and when I give it to them, it never lasts long!

Thanks for sharing with us, Sue!
