Fruit Fly Trap in the Hermit Crab Tank
Since the weather has gotten warmer I’ve noticed more bugs around the house. Unfortunately, I have seen some Fruit Flies in the crabitat. I started reading some of the posts on the HCA site and learned from Melin and Jedediah that these annoying bugs can be trapped with stale beer, cider vinegar, or red wine with a drop of soap. Here is what you should do if you get these critters in your crabitat:
- Pour a few ounces of one of the liquids in a small glass jar (a baby food jar was recommended)
- Take a sandwich bag and cut the corner of it
- Insert the end of the sandwich bag with the opening into the glass (do not immerse the open end) and wrap the rest of the bag around the lid of the glass
- Secure the bag with a rubber band
- Place the trap inside your crabitat so that it’s out of reach of the crabbies
You can see a diagram of this technique here.
Well, I didn’t really have an out of the way location that I could set the glass on, so I started looking around the house for alternatives to a glass jar. I found some small disposable bud vases that you get when you’re given a single rose and I modified it to make a fruit fly trap.

Currently I’m trying a little apple cider vinegar in the trap. If that doesn’t work I’ll try some beer since there never seems to be a shortage of that around this house. So far it seems to be working, so hopefully I can consume my household beer instead of sharing it with the flies.
