Pink Rugosus Hermit Crab

Pink ruggie - rugosus hermit crab - Canon 10D

This is one of my little pink ruggies (Rugosus Hermit Crab). I have found that ruggies are very outgoing and friendly. They’re the gentle explorers in my tank.

You will find rugosus hermit crabs in every shade of the rainbow. In addition to the pink ruggies that I have in my tank, I have shades of blue, peach, white, gray, orange, and pale green.

You can see from this picture some of the distinctive characteristics of a rugosus hermit crab: reddish feelers, dark circles under the eyes, and striping on the shield (Just under the shell).

This ruggie has recently molted. His hairy legs are one of the signs of a fresh molter. Another sign is very sharp toenails which you can’t see in this picture, but trust me, they’re sharp!

Rugosus hermit crabs do require saltwater; so be sure to have a saltwater pool in your tank if you plan to have ruggies or any other “exotic” species like Strawberries (Perlatus), E’s (Ecudorians), Brivimanus (Indos), or Cavipes (Cavs). While some say Clypeatus (PPs) don’t require saltwater, I think that they should always have saltwater available to them.
