Naked Again

Gomez - Indo - Brevimanus Hermit Crab - Naked

Gomez, my Indo (Brevimanus Hermit Crab), went naked on May 30th. He was ISOed, where he reshelled and seemed to be doing ok. A few days ago I put him back in the main tank. This morning when I got up he was on his way to the pool area of the tank, buck naked again. Back to ISO he went where he immediately climbed into the salt water pool. He has been sitting in the salt water pool naked now since about 9:00 a.m., moving around slowly.

I put some organic honey, coconut, golden raisins, and raw almonds with a sprinkle of calcium powder in the tank with him. Thus far he’s showed no interest in food. I put a lightweight turbo next to his food in the hopes that he would choose that over his heavy turbo if he decided to dress himself.

I’m not seeing anything on his abdomen that might be irritating him, nor do I see a molt sac. I even pulled out the Canon 10D with my 100mm lens so I could take a close up shot of his abdomen in case my naked eye was missing something.

I’m spending some time hunting around on the Internet so that I can hopefully learn more about this species and its behavior. Unfortunately, so far I’m not finding much. I’ve posted messages to the HCA, but I think I will post to some of the other Hermit Crab forums (LHC, CrabStreetJournal and Hermit Crabs ‘R’ Us) to see if anyone can give me some tips on how to handle my naked Indo.

This really concerns me, when I originally posted that Gomez had gone naked I learned that two other member’s Indos had recently gone naked, went swimming in the salt water pool and unfortunately passed. We thought that this might be happening because Indos couldn’t handle the warmer temps that other species liked, but I don’t know. Currently his ISO tank is 74 degrees with 77% humidity. Usually my main tank is between 78-80 for temp and humidity.

Any advice, articles, or resources that might help my naked Indo would be appreciated!
