Chowing Down

Here is a good shot of Monster eating; you can see how he uses his feeder pincher to bring food to his mandibles (used for handling and processing food) and maxillae (used to eat/mouthparts).
While we’re talking eating, I thought I would post a list of some of the foods that I feed my crabbies:
- Crab/Fish Foods: Hikari Tropical Algae Wafers, Hikari Daphnia, Freeze Dried Plankton, Hikari Flake, Tropical, Freeze Dried Baby Shrimp, Seaweed Selects Green Marine Algae, Bloodworms, Crushed Oyster Shell, Cuttlebone, Calendula Flowers, ZooMed Fruit Salad, Volkman Fruit-n-Like-It (bird fruit), Healthy Toppings (Pineapple, Coconut, Carrot Chunks), and T-Rex Treat Sensations - Banana and Carrot, Volkman Parrot Treat, Hikari Cichlid Gold - Note: I now feed my crabs very little commercial food now. I prefer to feed them fresh human foods.
- Human Foods: Meat and Fruit Baby Foods, Scrambled and Hard Boiled Eggs and Shells, Mango, Cherimoya, Grapes, Apples, Raisins, Golden Raisins, Coconut, Lettuce, Carrots, Celery, Broccoli, Green Bell Pepper, Green Leafy Veggies, Banana (red and yellow), Orange, Pineapple, Tomato, Grapes, Honeydew, Shrimp, Salmon, Raw Beef, Pork, Sardines, Chicken, Turkey, Almonds, Popcorn (treat), Quaker Oats, Oat Bran, Cheerios (treat) and Granola
- Other - Rose Petals, Nasturtium Flowers
If you’re looking for more foods to feed your hermit crabs, there is a great list over at the Land Hermit Crab Association.
I’m adding a couple more photos to this post to better illustrate the way they eat.

I have a couple of additional lists of hermit crab foods on this post.
Sue, Chestersmom on the HCA, recently share this recipe with me for crabby meal that can be used as a staple food for your crabbies.
