Bubbling Hermit Crab Crabitat

I’m very excited; I ordered bubbler bowls for the crabitat and they finally arrived tonight. Of course the whole dinner menu changed. Spaghetti was no longer the main course, leftover potato salad and sandwiches was the new dinner special.

I pulled out the old pools, the river rock and moved a lot of sand. I installed the new bubbler bowls, the air stones, and the air pumps. Here are a few pictures of the new aqua scape:

Crabitat Pools Side-by-Side

The salt water pool is to the left, fresh water to the right. The salt water pool is larger to accommodate my Straws and their need to submerge themselves.

Pools and Volcano in Crabitat

The pools were placed side-by-side in the Volcano/Aqua area of the tank.

I opted to stay with the river rock in the water area. I put the crabs food dishes down in this area at night and I have found that it’s much easier to clean up and maintain clean sand this way.

Tree and Pools in Crabitat

This tree trunk was my crabbies favorite place to hide. I decided to get a bigger trunk since they all couldn’t fit inside this tiny trunk.

They seem to like the new trunk, they have plenty of room to hide.

Final Pools in crabitat

I really like the new pools and I hope the crabs do too.

Things I’ve learned:

  1. That you really only need one pump for both pools. I really don’t have a lot of experience with air pumps. I assumed that I needed a small pump for each pool, not so. I could have used my existing pump from my humidifier and gotten a valve and additional hose to split the air flow. Ummmmmm Durrrrrr. I’ll do this tomorrow.
  2. Double check my measurements. I ordered a larger Aquatic Landing for the tank and it’s too big. The description said that it fits 30 gallon and larger tanks, but it’s too wide for my 55 gallon tank. I’m sure it will fit nicely in Vicki’s 120 gallon.

We have been planning to take my old 29 gallon crabitat and turn it into a salt water tank since it’s empty now. I told Rob that he would have to read the beginner’s guide to salt water aquariums with me and he has, but we have discussed that a salt water aquarium would be a lot of work to setup and maintain. So, Rob was looking at the new pools and setup tonight and he thought the tank was pretty cool. In a moment of weakness he blurted out that I may as well setup another crabitat in the 29 gallon. Ahhhhhhhh, I’ve just been waiting for his seal of approval.
