Robin vs. the Volcano
Robin vs. the Volcano
This is the volcano that I purchased for my 55 gallon hermit crab aquarium. I’ve placed my Dijonnaise bottle next to it to show the shear magnitude of this volcano. I purchased the Volcano from http://www.petdiscounters.com.
I was especially impressed with the fact that the volcano itself acts as a giant hermie cave. There is an entrance and exit to the cave.
The fogger itself goes into this unit….The bottom is solid and heavy so no fog goes into the cave. I covered the larger hole (in red below) because I got a bit of a shock when I stuck my finger way down the hole. This shock was caused by the hot water that the fogger produces. I am going to go to Michael’s tomorrow to get some plastic mesh so I can cover this area. It is not hot at the surface level, it’s only hot when you reach in.
This opening leads to the cave. i thought about covering it, but then I thought only my E’s would actually drop from there. I put sand inside the cave, so they should be ok.
Here you see the volcano in action. It glows red and spews fog…..Ohhhlaaaaalaaaa! Notice the cave entrance on the side.
Here is a side view of the cave entrance. You just know someone will go in there to molt.
My overall thoughts: I like this unit more than my waterfall. There is no way to flood the tank, since the water is poured into the top of the unit and there is a very obvious fill line (unless of course I’m not paying attention when I fill it).
I used a lid from a small margerine tub and cut holes in it to block the hole in the mesh. This way the hermies can’t get in there, but the fog can still get out. I turn on the Volcano on days that I need to boost the humidity, for example, after a tank clean.
The only warm area I notice is within the cave itself.
Note: No hermies were hurt in the process of creating this photo journal page.
